An exhibition with the following themes: The Westquarter (western part of the County of Flanders) was the scene of the religious troubles in the 16th century. The rise of Protestantism, the reaction of the government to this, streams of refugees to England, Germany, the Netherlands ..., the iconoclasm, the Blood Council with Duke Alva, the clandestine meetings, guerilla warfare by the Beggars and the unusually harsh reprisals.

After the Battle of Cassel in 1677 the French king Louis XIV annexed a part of Flanders to France. The castellany Belle, which included Nieuwkerke, thus became part of France. In 1769 France and the Austrian Netherlands decided to adjust their common erratic borderline from the sea to the Ardennes. Already in October 1769, Nieuwkerke and its neighbour Dranouter came under the Austrian Netherlands, now under the castellany Waasten. This border correction was an exchange for a number of Flemish...

Exhibition of "Hanswijk children's portraits". The Hanswijk Basilica has the largest collection of votive paintings in Flanders. It comprises 42 portraits of children, which (mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries) were presented to the statue of Our Lady of Hanswijk with the aim of asking Mary for long-term protection against illness and accident.

The exhibition can be seen every day (except Wednesdays) from 26 March to 4 July, from 1 pm to 5 pm.

With this photo exhibition, we want to break this cliché and let a wider public get to know the flourishing Christian church communities of fellow citizens who have moved here, in the metropolis of Antwerp and also here locally in the southern periphery.  In this way, churches are still a thread that runs through our Antwerp community and forge a bond of welcome and solidarity.
    Brochure available for free contribution.

The church was often a red thread in the life of the community. The cloth trade was also a red thread in the history of the county of Flanders. Both threads are therefore interwoven in the liturgy. Come and have a look at the rich collection of liturgical textiles.

A church is a place of welcome, a church is a place of beauty. On the occasion of the "Open Churches" weekend, Saint-Pierre is opening its doors to Less'Art, a collective of Lessinois artists founded in 2013. Painters, sculptors, watercolourists, ceramists... a range of artistic and craft disciplines practised by amateurs or professionals who free themselves from the solitude of the studio by forming friendly links. It is not unrealistic to say that, in the context of the 80/70 Commemorations,...
