In a period before Belgium existed, Laurent-Benoît Dewez (1731-1812) was undoubtedly the most prominent architect in our region. As court architect to the Austrian governor Charles of Lorraine, he was known for his contributions to neoclassical architecture, a style popular during the late 18th century. More specifically, his oeuvre was dominated by the creation of a unitary ‘Eglise Belgique’.

In the heart of Turnhout, on the traffic-free market square, you will find the iconic Sint Pieterskerk. You can explore the exhibition "Levensbeschouwingen over gastvrijheid" (philosophies of life about hospitality) there in the left aisle. This exhibition, an initiative of Solidarity Connects Attent, offers a fascinating look at how different philosophies of life experience hospitality. Exhibition inspired by the creative genius of Albert Van huffel, his choice of materials and the art that can form an overall concept with them, then and now. With this spring concert, three choirs join forces. AIRétile, school choir of Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege Westmalle & KoSiLe, choir from Sint-Lenaarts and our own Royal Sint-Pieterszangkoor. 31 MAY - 1 JUNE 2025In November 2018, a delegation from Canada visited Nieuwkerke to return an altar stone. This stone was rescued from the church's rubble by a Canadian chaplain in 1916 and taken back to his homeland. This led us to dedicate some exhibition panels to WWI and the rebuilding of church and village.
