The cross on the tower is from 1928 and was made by "Frans Barbieur ", blacksmith on the Biest. The cross became slanted due to storm "Eunice" in February 2022. As a result, the cross had to be removed to restore its anchorage. On 2 June, the tower cross will be set up in the church for viewing. Later in the year, it will return to its familiar place on the tower.

The theme for the Open Church Days 2024 "With a nod to the impossible" certainly applies to Kessenich's St Martin's Church. In 1896, everyone thought it impossible that a new village church could be built in Kessenich, a small village in the outskirts of Belgium with barely 800 inhabitants. But what seemed impossible could nevertheless be realised.
