Ostende is special in that the town has numerous places of worship of a dozen different beliefs. On Sacred Heart avenue (Heilig- Hartlaan), which cuts across Nieuwpoortsesteenweg, is the catholic church of Sacre Coeur.
Its construction, which began in 1914, was interrupted by the war so it was finally consecrated in 1928.Verraert and Vandamme the architects chose a Neo Byzantine style as seen in its three naves, the transept, the double western tower and the octagonal cupola which crowns the transept. The church’s adornment is inspired by the French devotion for the Saced Heart. The Mosaics which seem Byzantine are in fact typical of the style between the two wars. In 1997 the altar and its surroundings were rearranged by the Dutch monk H van der Laar Peace and tranquillity emanates from this white interior.
