Chapel | 1684 | Romanesque | Catholic Church
On the heights of Visé, following a troubled period marked by several wars and sieges in the region, a chapel dedicated to the Virgin was built in 1684. Its dimensions and layout were modelled on those of the Italian sanctuary of Loreto. The building is as exact a replica as possible of the holy house in which Mary is said to have lived and which, according to legend, was brought from Nazareth to Italy at the end of the 13th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, a small hermitage (intended as a home for the chapel's caretaker) was built next to the place of worship.
Self-guided tours from 2pm to 6pm.
Guided tours at 2.30pm and 4.30pm on both afternoons.
This replica of the Sancta Casa in Loreto near Ancona in Italy was built in 1684 by a canon of the Visé chapter on his return from Italy. Restored in 1964, it is dedicated to Notre-Dame de Lorette in gratitude for her protection when the town was taken by French troops in 1675. It houses a clothed Virgin Mary, carried in procession every Assumption eve.
The hermitage opposite the chapel was home to its 2 guardians. The last hermit was shot by the Germans on 5 August 1914.
