Description
With beautiful farms and village houses close by, old cobbled streets, surrounded by an ancient graveyard and a dominant view over the countryside, this charming church in white Gobertange stone sitting above this superb village on the side of a hill feels like a corner of Burgundy.
Inside, in the chancel hangs a painting of the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remy. The whitewashed walls give the church a feeling of tranquillity and contemplation. Also worth seeing are the works of Gabriel Taeymans: a dozen ceramics depicting the Passion of Christ. It’s a visual path without flourishes or anguish which portrays the essential with intensity.

Remarkable elements
Virgin and child
An unsigned painting on wood dated between 1591 and 1600.It measures 1m by 1m.The work is also called the “Sacred Family” with the young John the Baptist and the Angel Gabriel.
Statue of Saint-Remy
A clothed polychrome statue of the bishop of Reims, Saint Remy from the 19th century is on the north side altar. The work is 120cms high and the clothes were traditionally made by the village seamstresses.
Baptism of Clovis
Oil Painting, unsigned, depicting the baptism of Clovis by bishop Remy of Reims. It is dated between 1701 and 1800 and was commissioned by the priest Larmormainy , whose funeral cartridge is on the sacristy wall. The canvas is 300cms high and 200cms wide.
Stations of the cross
The ceramist Gabriel Taeymans,is the creator of several stations of the cross. He was commissioned to make one for the church of Saint Remy in 1994. With his unique style he made them in natural postures as he considered that those who were with Christ during his crucifixion would have demonstrated their tenderness.
Baptismal fonts
Baptismal fonts commissioned by the priest Jean Delwaide in 1687. Unfortunately, the latter died the same year and it was his successor ,Charles Léonard, who christened the newborn of the parish. The sculptor retained the original pedestal but we are unable to date it.
Tombstone
Tombstone in blue stone with the arms of “de Fonteny et de Raul (16th century) depicting a recumbent couple: Raes de Fonteny, died in 1540 and his wife Jeanne de Raul, (Raulet or Rauwelet) died in 1550. (Work badly damaged).
The man is bare-headed but some parts of his chain mail are still visible. The woman has a headdress and her clothes fall around her feet in rich pleats. Bizarrely, the stone has been sculpted into a hollow in order to separate the couple up to the waist. The slab was carefully restored in 2008 and it is shown prominently on the right of the church.
