Deep Roots

‘Deep Roots in Turnhout’ is a project where art, heritage, nature, wonder and movement come together. The project is inspired by the paintings of Turnhout-based artist Nele Van der Linden.
The exhibition is linked to a walk through the town past remarkable trees, as well as to all sorts of creative activities.
The project runs from 16 October to 15 November 2026.
The paintings can be viewed at two venues.
At Café Ranonkel, there is the ‘Stamboom’ series, portraits of her family with ‘roots’ in Turnhout.
And in St Peter’s Church, there is the ‘Turnhout, City through the Trees’ series. Colourful cityscapes seen through the trees, balancing between the pictorial and the imaginary, which draw the viewer into a fairy-tale landscape.
In the church, TV screens display photographs (DFT vzw) of remarkable trees in the city.

Concert mass with the choir Cantat

Concert mass with the choir Cantat

The vocal ensemble Cantat was formed in the autumn of 2006. Six singing enthusiasts were approached to perform at a concert in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, organised by the Davidsfonds.
Under its former name, Turnhout’s ‘Vooicaal Ensembelken’, the small choir gave performances of religious and secular music for many occasions: church services, providing musical entertainment at receptions and anniversaries, charity concerts, etc.
Highlights included the concert at De Renesse Castle in Oostmalle in aid of Muco, the All Saints’ Day celebrations at St Nicholas’ Church in Brussels, and the two trips to Salazac in the south of France, where the Ensembelken gave six charity concerts for an orphanage in Sucre, Bolivia.Year after year, the choir expanded in size, and today it comprises 28 singers: 9 sopranos, 8 altos, 7 tenors and 4 basses. It also adopted a new name: Vocal Ensemble Cantat. The ensemble actively took part in the annual Christmas concerts featuring all the choirs from Turnhout, under the overall direction of conductor Herman De Houwer. It has performed charity concerts on several occasions, including for Samana and Fataki, amongst others. Cantat also features regularly on the programme for Turnhout by Night.
Herman De Houwer consistently sets the choir new challenges. Thanks to his inspiring leadership, the choir achieves excellent results and making music together remains a wonderful highlight for the singers.
The repertoire includes songs from virtually all musical genres and from all periods, from the Renaissance to the present day.On 18 October 2026, the choir will therefore celebrate its 20th anniversary with an anniversary concert mass at St Peter’s Church in Turnhout. The choir is currently preparing an atmospheric hunting concert scheduled for autumn 2027.The programme for 18 October at St Peter’s Church:
• The premiere of Herman De Houwer’s *Missa Cantanova*.
• *Ave Maria* by Xabier Sarasola
• *Benedicamus Domino* by Frans Krafft
• A Scottish hymn about solidarity
• *Sacrum convivium* by Xabier Sarasola
• *Alleluia / Viva la musica* by Erno Ernöd)Further information is also available at www.gaudioso.net or via info@gaudioso.net
You are most welcome and this event comes highly recommended.
