Description
The church of Mechelen , centre of this merged parish, is dedicated to two 6th century bishops of Maastricht: Saint Monolfe and Saint Gondolfe.
This Neo-Classic building constructed mainly in brick dates from 1851-1854.The architect was Herman Jaminé de Hasselt.
The church contains ancient religious artifacts such as 12th century baptismal fonts and 16th century statues of Monulfus and Gondulfus.
The 19th century altars were restored in 2004. The restored organ, a blend between a Clerinx-organ (1854) and a Geurts-organ (1912), was inaugurated in 2007.

Remarkable elements
The empty centre
In 2012 the church furniture was rearranged so parishioners and pastors now sit closer together while the centre of the church is left empty for God to fill it with His presence.
Romanesque font
The stone part dates from the 12th century and was moved here from the old parish church located nearer the river Meuse.
Painting “Adoration of the Magi”
Experts identified this painting as a masterpiece by François Walschartz, a pupil of Rubens. This 400-year old painting was restored in 2016.
Main altar
In 2004 this 19th century altar was restored and now shines anew with its gold leaf elements.
Statues of Saint Monulfus and Saint Gondulfus
These polychrome oak statues were carved by the well-known “Master of Elsloo” in the 17th century. Elsloo is only about 5 straight kilometers away from Mechelen-aan-de-Maas.
