a great weekend of the open churches

a great weekend of the open churches

Tuesday 16 June 2026

The weekend kicked off with the traditional organ concert by Maurice Clement at St. Michael’s Church in Luxembourg City. Other highlights included lectures by Benoit Niederkorn, director of the National Military Museum, in Eschweiler and Mensdorf on the project to create a database of all of Luxembourg’s war memorials. In Eschweiler, Erny Kohn from the Cercle d'études de la bataille des Ardennes also recounted the fascinating story of the American soldier immortalized in a fresco in the church.

Guided tours and concerts were offered in numerous churches. In Oetrange and Wilwerdingen, visitors were able to enjoy an exhibition. In Clerf, the Loretto Chapel was officially welcomed into the Open Churches network. A new flag was blessed in the Glacis Chapel; it serves as a reminder of their ancestral homeland for the descendants of Luxembourgish emigrants to America.

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to look for traces of World War II memorials in churches and report them to the Military Museum so that they can be added to the database. There are a particularly large number of stained-glass windows that were donated in gratitude or as a memorial and that are not immediately recognized as monuments, but are nonetheless part of this heritage.

A big thank you goes out to everyone involved, including the church guides, singers, musicians, and both volunteer and full-time church staff... .
