In Lessines, Good Friday is an unmissable event thanks to the unique atmosphere that fills the historic centre, offering everyone a moment of stillness and reflection.

Today, Lessines’ oldest tradition unfolds in three stages:

7.30 pm. First part: the Service of the Passion. To the sound of drums, the penitents enter Saint-Pierre Church. As the service progresses, punctuated by the singing of the parish choirs, night falls.
Around 9.00 pm. Act two: the procession of the penitents. To the sound of drums, participants from the various groups in the procession gather in the aisles of the church to make their way into the town. Outside, all streetlights, as well as the lights in houses and shops, are switched off. Only torches and lanterns illuminate the route through the streets of the old town. The procession moves slowly, to the sound of rattles, drums and singing.
Around 10 pm. Act Three: the Entombment. Back inside the church, the procession makes its way to the Chapel of Saint Barbara. The reading of the Passion comes to an end. The recumbent figure of Christ is laid in the tomb. Slowly, quietly, the crowd disperses.
