Description
This listed Baroque monument, built in local marbled stone, completes charmingly the rural landscape and grottos of the parish of Neerkanne.
The chapel was built by the son of the carpenter Herman Jekermans of Kanne in 1647. When he was 34 he left for Jerusalem, promising that he would build a copy of the Holy Sepulchre when he returned.
Unfortunately, the building was damaged during WWII but was restored in 1960. A further renovation was completed in 1995.
Most noteworthy is the chapel’s façade with its Tuscan pilasters and sculpture.
The bench, the trees and the view of the neighbouring hills gives this idyllic place a feeling of serenity.

Remarkable elements
Fronton
The door lintel bears the chronogram “sepUlchro DoMini IesU gLorioso,” whose capitals give the date 1714, when the current baroque chapel was built, replacing a 1647 chapel modeled on the Holy Sepulchre. Above the fronton are the coat of arms and inscription honoring Baron Daniel Wolff de Dopff, governor of Maastricht and lord of Neerkanne. The triangular fronton shows a phoenix symbolizing Christ’s resurrection.
Tympan
Like the burial chamber, here the sculptures in relief show the resting body of Christ. Angels sit at His head and feet. In the background hang seven candle sticks, referring to the candles that once burned in the chapel.
Holy Sepulchre
The so-called Holy Sepulchre dates from 1716. The baroque decorations were financed by Henri-François Bonhomme, who was canon and dean of the chapter of St. Servaas in Maastricht. On the right of the grave is an inscription in his honour. In the burial chamber lies the body of Christ, partly covered by a sheet. This sculpture was ordered by pastor Stassen (1836-1873) after the original sculpture disappeared during the French Revolution.
Altar
The original main altar dates from 1716. A painting, showing Christ being lowered from the cross, used to hang above this altar. During World War II the chapel was severely damaged and in 1954, just before the start of the restorations, it collapsed. Only the facade and the Holy Sepulchre remained intact. The altar was re-erected during the restoration in 1960. A new painting of Christ being lowered from the cross by Kees van den Berg replaces the one destroyed.
Communion rail
On the left we see the coat of arms of Leonardo Bonhomme, on the right is the coat of arms of his wife Oda de Glen. The communion rail was a gift from this couple in 1717. The Bonhomme family owned real estate in Kanne. Leonardo’s nephew, Henri-François Bonhomme had the Holy Sepulchre embellished.
