The vault is adorned with a fresco dating from the late 16th century – early 15th century depicting the Annunciation, the episode in which the Archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will become a mother. On the left, one can make out the Virgin Mary seated beneath a canopy supported by two angels, whilst the archangel approaches from the right.
Upon their death, important figures could be depicted lying on heavy stone slabs sealing their tombs. Here, a Benedictine monk lies with his arms crossed, his head resting on a pillow and his feet held by a lion. The lion symbolises power, justice, wisdom and resurrection. Indeed, legend has it that lion cubs only open their eyes three days after birth, thus recalling the resurrection of Christ.
These fantastical creatures are characterised by a head featuring a beak that bites into the edge of the arch on which they are carved. This motif, of Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon origin, was extremely popular in Normandy during the Romanesque period.
This stained-glass window was created by master glassmaker Michel Petit. It was he who restored the stained-glass windows designed by Renée Lalique for the Community of the Faithful Virgin in Douvres-le-Délivrande (1997–1999).
Two bishops are carved near the corbels. They are blessing with their right hands and are depicted seated on a chair. In the case of one of them, a curule chair with crossed legs—a symbol of power—can be discerned at his feet. An identical chair is still preserved in the treasury of Bayeux Cathedral.
Saint-Gabriel is famous for its figurative capital blocks (carved elements supporting the vault). Most of the motifs are inspired by illuminated manuscripts and Scandinavian art. Bayeux Cathedral features similar examples. The strong stylistic similarities suggest that it was probably the same craftsmen who worked on both projects.
