A Te Deum sung to mark the National Holiday in the presence of the local authorities. However, everyone is welcome to attend the Te Deum and the reception afterwards.
The free Tuesday afternoon concerts in Turnhout in July have been a huge success since 2012. Our St Peter’s Church has attracted countless listeners to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the carillon and organ, and to chat after the concerts over a nice pint of Corsendonk or a delicious organ lunch. These summer concerts are and remain a fixture in the wider Turnhout area. The Gaudioso team and city carillonneur Koen Van Assche are joining forces once again this year to showcase the carillon and organ splendour of St Peter’s Church, featuring outstanding musicians who consistently present an engaging programme for a wide audience. Thanks to a fruitful collaboration with Visit Turnhout, the city carillonneur, the city poet, generous sponsorship and the dedication of many volunteers, the public is treated to beautiful music every Tuesday in July. This includes four organ and carillon concerts, free Corsendonk, a delicious organ lunch at Restaurant Agora and the opportunity to visit the carillon in the tower of St Peter’s Church. Jennifer Lory-Moran (b. 1974) has been playing the chimes at Cornell University Chimes in Ithaca (New York) for over 30 years. In addition, as a carillonneur, she regularly gives concerts on carillons in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota and Florida. In June 2024, she obtained the carillonneur diploma from the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, and this academic year she received her final diploma from the Mechelen Carillon School.
Jennifer also enjoys writing arrangements for the carillon. Some of these arrangements can be heard during her concert. Hera Wyckers (b. 1988) began her musical training at the academies of Sint-Niklaas and Bornem, studying organ, harpsichord and voice. Hera decided to continue her organ studies at the Lemmens Institute. There, she obtained her Master’s degree with first-class honours in June 2011. She has taken part in various masterclasses. In addition to playing the organ, Hera has another passion: choral singing. She also completed a master’s degree in choral conducting and is currently the conductor of the mixed choir Dulcisona from Ghent. Hera teaches organ and keyboard classes at the Knokke-Heist Academy of Arts. From 2011 to 2022, she was the titular organist at St Martin’s Church in Beveren-Waas. Since 2022, she has been appointed as one of the three city organists in Sint-Niklaas.

Oisín Dilger is an Irish carillonneur. This year, he graduated from the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen. Since arriving in Mechelen, he has performed in Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA. In August 2026, he will take up his post as the new resident carillonneur in Centralia, Illinois (USA). Oisín’s main interests in carillon playing lie in the Baroque repertoire and playing jazz. He is also an active arranger and composer of contemporary music. In addition to carillon playing, he has composed various chamber music works, which have been performed live in Ireland. Oisín is also studying organ at the Conservatoire of Mechelen and has been practising classical and jazz piano since childhood. Hans Christian Hein studied music at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. He obtained his degree in Church Music. Hans Christian Hein has served as organist in various Danish churches. He teaches subjects such as organ, choral conducting, liturgy and psalmology. He also gives lectures on courses covering topics in music history as well as psalmology. He has given numerous concerts as an organist both at home and abroad.

The free Tuesday afternoon concerts in Turnhout in July have been a huge success since 2012. There are also some wonderful concerts scheduled for the second half of the month. Liam Flood is an American student from Chicago. He studied chemical engineering at university. He later moved to Washington D.C. to work as an engineer. Alongside this, Liam developed a love for music. Liam’s first musical instrument was an American chime of 15 bells (similar to a carillon). He moved to Belgium in 2025 to study at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen, where he graduated this academic year under Koen Van Assche. He enjoys taking Dutch lessons and discovering Belgium’s history, culture and cuisine.
Tom Van Der Plas (b. 1991) studied organ at the Royal Conservatoire of Liège, where he was awarded a first-class distinction for his final recital, which featured works by Bach and Dupré, as well as a reworked transcription of the third movement of César Franck’s symphony. Tom teaches in the organ class at the Municipal Conservatoire of Mechelen. He is also the titular organist at St John’s Church in Mechelen and is director of music at the Anglican Church of Saint Boniface in Antwerp. As a conductor, Tom leads Cantus Amici from Mechelen and the youth and adult choir Lyric Music from Bonheiden. Tom has attended various international masterclasses and choral and organ courses, and performs regularly as a soloist, collaborating with choirs, orchestras and other soloists.
Oona Van Aken (b. 1990) works as a dancer, choreographer and teacher. She graduated in dance and performance from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (S.E.A.D.) and also holds a degree in Theatre Studies from Ghent University. In 2022, she collaborated with Tom Van Der Plas on ‘Mad Rush’, an initial interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at combining the power of the organ and dance through Philip Glass’s composition of the same name. This collaboration continued in 2023 with an expansion of the programme under the name ‘Axis Mundi’. Oona also works as a dance teacher at the Bornem Academy and as a freelancer for Wisper.

This year’s final concert will feature our city carillonneur, the organist and conductor of St Peter’s, and a former pupil of Sara. Koen Van Assche (b. 1967) is the city carillonneur of Turnhout, Antwerp, Lier and Herentals. He studied carillon at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen (where he now teaches carillon) and obtained a Master’s degree in Carillon from the LUCA School of Arts (Lemmens, Leuven). He has won prizes at various international carillon competitions and has given carillon concerts in all European carillon-playing countries, in the USA and in Australia. He is the author of a teaching method for carillon playing. Koen is known for his carillon performances in combination with other instruments, particularly with the mobile carillon, the “Bronzen Piano”. He has recorded eight carillon CDs, both solo and featuring the carillon in combination with piano, mezzo-soprano, classical accordion, harp and flute. Koen is the current president of the World Carillon Federation. In recent years, he has also been active as a consultant for carillon restorations and new carillons, such as the Antwerp Singelberg Carillon, the heaviest in Western Europe, which is due to be inaugurated in 2028. Farchod Yuldashev began his violin studies in Uzbekistan.
In 1999, he moved to Belgium, where he attended Sint-Jan Berchmans College and was taught by Sara, amongst others. He continued his violin studies in Antwerp. At the same time, he prepared for entry to the Ghent Conservatoire and the LUCA School of Arts. Farchod has experience in both orchestral and chamber music. His orchestral experience includes the Ghent International Orchestra Festival, the Flemish Opera Symphony Orchestra, Musical van Vlaanderen, the Belgian Session Orchestra, the Mannheim Philharmonic and the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra. Sara Van Gucht grew up with music and, in addition to teaching religious education, English and history at Sint-Jan Berchmans College in Westmalle, she is also an organist and conductor at St Peter’s Church. She also conducts the SJB school choir, has been a volunteer in the prison service for over 20 years, and is the driving force behind the Gaudioso team.
