A unique building in the Liège region, an exceptional architectural treasure of the municipality of Juprelle, and a remarkable church within the Deanery of Ans and the Pastoral Unit of Les Douze! We look forward to welcoming you to this building, a gem of the late Baroque period, recognised and fully listed since 1935. We will recount the history of this church with its unconventional architecture as we know it today, which harmoniously combines the nobility of tuffeau stone, brick and natural slate, the result of the extension and embellishment works conceived and brilliantly carried out by the parish priest Melchior Alexandre Verdin (1666–1742) from the end of the 17th century. We will guide you through the rich and sometimes surprising interior of this true gem. We can discuss ‘The Verdin Mystery’, represented by the 18 coffers forming the central vault of the nave, a mystery that remains unsolved to this day. Is it, as Paul de St Hilaire suggests in ‘Liège et Meuse mystérieuse’ (Editions Rossel 1980), ‘The Heretical Testament of Protonotary Verdin’, relating to alchemy and Hermeticism, or, according to other experts (such as Jean Wiser), simply a form of sacred art? All agree, however, on the remarkable and unique nature of the coffered ceilings as a church decoration. You will also encounter exceptional figures, some of whom were contemporaries of Alexandre Verdin. We look forward to welcoming you. La Fabrique d’Eglis
