Description

The original church is probably in late Gothic style. The church suffered a lot of damage in the past, amongst which a fire in 1806 but most of all a total destruction during the First World War. A project for a new building in modernist style was rejected, and in 1924, a new building in eclectic basilica style was eventually built, with Neo-Romanesque influences in the tower, but also regional and most of all Byzantine influences. The three cupolas above the nave are characteristic of this latter style.

Inside, the austere decor from the reconstruction period stands out, as well as the statue of Saint Margaret behind the altar, and the Neo-Romanesque confessionals.

Remarkable elements

The shrine of Saint Margaret (1925)

The reliquary with a wax sculpture of Saint Margaret was placed in the church on October 27, 1925 under the guidance of pastor Michel Delrue. It was made by the Lemaire studio located in Ypres. The shrine is covered with a beautiful sculpted lid, crowned with cross and palm branches, symbols of martyrdom. At the front, one can see a medallion with the inscription ‘Corpus S. Margarita’ and the lily branches symbolizing her virginity. Every year, from July 20, there’s a novena on behalf of Saint Margaret against ‘cramps’.
