A new meeting place in the cathedral of Antwerp officially inaugurated

Saturday 09 June 2018

In the Cathedral of Our Lady 'The Place' has been officially inaugurated. This is a space in the St. John's Chapel where visitors and believers can have a quiet chat over a snack and a drink.

The former St. John's Chapel in the Cathedral has been converted into a meeting place for churchgoers and tourists. Once upon a time the Sunday school was located here and in recent years it has been a glorified storage room. But after a thorough restoration, visitors can admire the vaults and the rood screen, hidden behind carpentry for years to come. De Plek', as the space will be called, was officially opened by Commissioner Luk Lemmens, Monsignor Johan Bonny and Director Christian Devos.

"The redevelopment of the chapel is part of the extended visitor route and reception policy of the Cathedral. Starting this summer, volunteers will welcome visitors to the portal of the Cathedral of Our Lady. But for more in-depth discussions, they can use 'The Place', where they can have a bite to eat and a drink", says Commissioner Lemmens. Last year, some 55,000 people from Antwerp and some 280,000 tourists visited the cathedral.

During opening hours 'De Plek' is open to tourists, initially on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

The cathedral also has its own beer: Aurore, a blonde, and Memento, a dark one. They are for sale in the cathedral shop. (ADA)
