The cathedral-basilica of Boulogne-sur-Mer and its frescoes

Charles Soulacroix's 600 m² frescoes for Boulogne-sur-Mer cathedral are considered his masterpiece. These frescoes are clearly a fusion of the sacred arts of his time. Commissioned by Monseigneur Haffreingue, Charles Soulacroix respected the wishes of both the Apostolic Prothonotary and the papacy. Pope Pius IX approved all the details of the frescoes. Although it is not clear from current literature, we believe that these frescoes, completed in 1865, influenced artists from the 1870s to 1910, as shown by the aesthetic links with the Basilica of the Rosary in Lourdes.
