Zepperen is first mentioned around 650 as ‘Septimburias’, a place where
Saint Genevieve of Paris was venerated. The Chapter of St Servatius in Maastricht had a strikingly beautiful church built in this westernmost ‘bank’. All that remains from the 12th century is the late Romanesque west tower with a 15th-century late Gothic nave. Extensive Neo-Gothic restoration took place around 1900.
The
murals from 1509 cover the entire southern transept and depict, in addition to a large Last Judgement, a colossal Saint Christopher and a medieval comic strip depicting the life of Saint Genevieve in eleven scenes.
Late Gothic altarpiece panels and a Pietà from the same period are masterpieces.
