The church of Cremarest is hidden in the folds of the countryside around Boulogne, and situated in the protected park of the « Headlands and Marshes » of the Opale Coast.
Its imposing fortified tower of white stone, probably dating from the 14th century, served as a refuge for the inhabitants in case of invasion, as we can see from the chimney in the room on the first floor of the tower.
The North of France, crossroads for the major nations of the time, was the site of numerous battles between France and England, or France and Nethelands. These conflicts caused the population to organise themselves and fortify communal property, especially churches.
Within the church, the grotesque persons carved in the arches and columns will amuse us, and we could try to find the fantastic animals hidden in the fronds of the carved vegetation.
A harmonious church and village to be discovered by following one of the numerous itineries for pedestrians, cyclists or horse-riders.
