During the weekend of the Open Churches Days, we will open our church to present to visitors our polychrome stations of the sross in bas-relief, as well as the several valuable paintings, including those by the Veurn painter Vigor Boucquet (Saint Carolus Boromeus and the Plague Sufferers of Milan) to the general public, as well as the recently installed commemorative fire-glass window and memorabilia from the Holy Family Church of the Brandhoek neighbourhood demolished last year.
Today, they still boast a rich and varied cultural heritage. Radiating above all peace and serenity, they are places of wonder and meditation. The memory of the world's conflagration is never far away: a stained glass window, a symbol of peace, a list of war victims, commemorative plaques, statues. They have all suffered the same fate, passing on the memory and opening their doors wide.
In some churches, guides will be available and there will be specific activities (see www.eglisesouvertes.be). But the war itself, as well as the destruction of heritage and human lives, will be evoked mainly under the Menin Gate, with the Last Post every day at 8pm, and in the reconstructed cloth market in Ypres, where the Flander Fields Museum is located (www.inflandersfields.be).
