Saint Michael’s church is the Sunday church of the parish group Emmaus of the city of Bree. The church was dedicated to the patron saint of the city.
In written sources from 1007, the church in Britte - the former name for the city of Bree - was mentioned for the first time. The choir, the central nave up to the fourth column and the left cross arm date from 1452.
The enlargement to the present size of the church in neo-Gothic style took place in 1901-1902. The 45 meter high tower and the aisles were only then added to the church. Since 1992, the church has been fully classified as a monument. In the church, one can admire a Pietà (from 1400), a beautiful calvary, a statue of the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, and a statue of Saint Christopher (attributed to the Master of Elsloo), and a group of statues called ‘The lamentation before the Holy Sepulchre’ from 1530-1540.
In 1676, the fraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows was founded in honor of the pietà. Since then, the Marian feasts have been organized every 25 years.
From 2018 to 2020, Saint Michael’s church was thoroughly renovated.
