Description

Located near the border between France and Belgium, Saint-Martin's church stands in the heart of the citadel of Montmedy.
The first mention of the church of Saint-Martin appears in a charter drawn up in 1156, by which the abbey of Orval (Belgium) obtains its patronage. It rises to the top of a rocky promontory. Smaller than the current church, it is surrounded by a cemetery. In the 13th century, the Counts of Chiny made Montmédy their capital. The hill then became a strategic military location where a castle was built. In the 16th century, Charles V had a citadel built there and, in 1756, the rebuilt church became a military garrison church. The cemetery was moved to the foot of the citadel, where it is still located today.

Overlooking the landscape, Saint-Martin's church is today the emblem of Montmedy. It was listed in the National Inventory of Historic Monuments on October 20, 1929. The church is currently part of the "Heritage and Housing" cluster created in 2016 to preserve the historical heritage of Montmedy. It hosts a cultural space where exhibitions, conferences and organ concerts are regularly organized.

Remarkable elements

Le maître-autel

Le maître-autel en marbre est surmonté d'un impression demi-baldaquin à six colonnes qui laisse apparaître le symbole trinitaire sur un fond de soleil rayonnant.

L'orgue restauré

Le buffet en chêne date de la fin du XVIIe siècle, il est classé au titre des Monuments Historiques le 7 décembre 1993. Les tuyaux furent démontés en 1917, sous l’occupation allemande. L’association de « L’orgue de la Citadelle », crée afin d’aider à sa restauration, et la commune de Montmédy ont permis de remettre l'orgue en état de jeu en 2017. Alors qu’il n’avait plus résonné depuis un siècle, il est aujourd'hui régulièrement utilisé pour des concerts.

Vierge à l'Enfant

Placée à gauche de la chapelle de Vierge, cette Vierge à l'Enfant en pierre polychrome date du XIVe siècle. Elle est classée au titre des Monuments Historiques le 20 juin 1933. Elle fut apportée par les allemands durant la Première Guerre mondiale.

Saint Michel terrassant le Dragon

Datée du XVIIe siècle, cette statue en pierre polychrome représente saint Michel terrassant le Dragon. Elle est classée au titre des Monuments Historiques le 29 mai 1936. Comme le veut la tradition, l’archange Saint-Michel devrait tenir une lance dans sa main droite. Son avant-bras qui a malheureusement été perdu fait défaut à la scène.

Les stalles du choeur

L'inscription gravée sur l'une des miséricordes* date ces majestueuses stalles en 1779. Remarquablement sculptées dans du bois de chêne, elles offraient au total 22 places assis aux membres du clergé. Elles sont classées au titre des Monuments Historiques le 20 juin 1933.

* Petite console placée sous l’abattant. En relevant le siège, l'occupant pouvait y prendre appui en toute discrétion.

La chapelle des Malandry

La chapelle des Malandry, également appelée chapelle Notre-Dame de la Compassion, abrite la dalle funéraire de Jean IV d'Allamont, gouverneur de Montmédy mort en 1644.
