A church is a place of welcome, a church is a place of beauty. On the occasion of the "Open Churches" weekend, Saint-Pierre is opening its doors to Less'Art, a collective of Lessinois artists founded in 2013. Painters, sculptors, watercolourists, ceramists... a range of artistic and craft disciplines practised by amateurs or professionals who free themselves from the solitude of the studio by forming friendly links. It is not unrealistic to say that, in the context of the 80/70 Commemorations,...

The concert will be performed by Peter Verhoyen on flute and piccolo and harpist Ann-Sofie Verhoyen. These two excellent musicians will present a tasty programme in which father and daughter will play pieces they recorded last year on the CD entitled "The Nightingale". The concert will be a pleasant summery mix of well-known melodies of virtuoso nimbleness interspersed with subdued evening sounds.

10 a.m.: Festive mass celebrated by the choir 'Gospel Joys'. A special experience for the church-goers to hear those swinging Afro-American gospel songs during the celebration of the Mass. The exuberant joyful singing as support for the prayer is a surprising experience.

  • The association Open Churches offers you a travelling exhibition of 56 photos on the theme of "The unusual in religious building". The selected pictures show the curious, mystical, fantastic look... and the offbeat humour of many photographers, amateurs or professionals. A great tool to invite the faithful and visitors to be challenged by the mysteries of your church.

The church was often a red thread in the life of the community. The cloth trade was also a red thread in the history of the county of Flanders. Both threads are therefore interwoven in the liturgy. Come and have a look at the rich collection of liturgical textiles.

On the St. Medardus parish there were five monastic orders: 4 women's orders and 1 men's order. Within each monastery there was a small or larger prayer room. Each order had its own specific task. Return to the time of the nuns and the friars!

An exhibition with the following themes: The Westquarter (western part of the County of Flanders) was the scene of the religious troubles in the 16th century. The rise of Protestantism, the reaction of the government to this, streams of refugees to England, Germany, the Netherlands ..., the iconoclasm, the Blood Council with Duke Alva, the clandestine meetings, guerilla warfare by the Beggars and the unusually harsh reprisals.

After the Battle of Cassel in 1677 the French king Louis XIV annexed a part of Flanders to France. The castellany Belle, which included Nieuwkerke, thus became part of France.
