A look at the monastic heritage in the Pas-de-Calais

The exhibition presents the place of the abbeys in the economic, intellectual, cultural and spiritual history of the Pas-de-Calais department, particularly through their artistic production. The exhibition goes through time, from the foundations to the contemporary revival, passing through the evolutions of the modern era and the time of the reforms. 


As early as the 7th century, numerous abbeys were built. Some of them, such as Saint-Vaast, Mont-Saint-Eloi and Saint-Bertin, had an influence far beyond our borders. The monks were architects, builders, copyists, artists, etc. as well as land clearers. Monastic expansion reached its golden age in the 11th and 12th centuries. The abbeys built medieval Christianity and laid the foundations for the first geography of the department. In modern times, the monks were no longer at the heart of the life of the Church. The abbeys were placed under the authority of a King. From the 16th century onwards, the artistic production stimulated by the abbeys multiplied with Baroque art and the great reconstructions of the "palaces of faith" in the 18th century, such as the Abbey of Saint-Vaast in Arras.
