In his quest for conquest, the French king Louis XIV occupied Flanders, among other places, in the 17th century. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) annexed the castellany Belle (now Bailleul Fr.) and the castellany Cassel to the French crown. 31 MAY - 1 JUNE 2025In November 2018, a delegation from Canada visited Nieuwkerke to return an altar stone. This stone was rescued from the church's rubble by a Canadian chaplain in 1916 and taken back to his homeland. This led us to dedicate some exhibition panels to WWI and the rebuilding of church and village.

The beautiful multicoloured embroidery deserves to be brought out of the darkness (for a while). In addition, the statues of saints that were taken from the attic and given a place of honour in our church also deserve special attention. They are masterpieces of woodcarving art. -
