Mechelen is a city on a human scale where you can enjoy strolling from one historic church to another on foot. It is also a city with a rich past to which the many top works of art attest. This is certainly true in St John's Church. Not only does it have The Adoration of the Magi by Peter Paul Rubens on display, there are also unique 14th-century murals hidden in the tower.

Peter Paul Rubens was one of the greatest artists of his time. You can see this clearly in The Miraculous Catching of Fish in the Church of Our Lady over the River Thistle. Pass by and listen to the rolling sea, smell the salty water, feel the sand under your feet and experience the miracle.

Antoon Van Dyck's four-hundred-year-old masterpiece "The Calvary" will be restored during summer 2024. This will take place in the church itself and during the Open Church Days, the restorers will be happy to talk to you and you can literally come and look on their hands. Those who know the vicissitudes of this painting, looted by the French revolutionaries, hidden during the World Wars... realise that it is a miracle that it can still be admired in Dendermonde today. The cross on the tower is from 1928 and was made by "Frans Barbieur ", blacksmith on the Biest. The cross became slanted due to storm "Eunice" in February 2022. As a result, the cross had to be removed to restore its anchorage. On 2 June, the tower cross will be set up in the church for viewing. Later in the year, it will return to its familiar place on the tower.
